Uwe Reinhardt on health care reform

In this comment, Uwe Reinhardt makes a powerful case for health care reform. The current system, which spendsfar too much on private insurance company profits, leaves everyone vulnerable, including those of us who have insurance through our jobs.
Here is my personal comment. It is way past time for a strong public program of health insurance in thiscountry. My relatives in Norway have excellent medical care provided by their government and feel valued by their government. Older Americans have a good health insurance program - Medicare -covering everyone aged 65 years and older, as well as some peoplewith disabilities.
We must have health care reform that includes a strong public option. A public option can build in effeciencies and negotiate prices.. Otherwise, for-profit companies will continue to increase costs and pad their profits at the expense of the rest of us.
Health reform that includes a strong public option will improve health care for all of us. Everyone benefits from reform if there is an efficient public program available to all. Health care will be more accessible, costs will be lower, and the terrible inefficiencies of the current system will be reduced. We must have health care reform now.
