LANSING TO RECOGNIZE 2,000 IRAQ WAR DEATHS AS ANOTHER MILESTONE PASSES

Another tragic milestone of 2,000 US soldiers killed in Iraq is bringing Lansing area residents together at 4:30pm on Wednesday, October 26 in front of Ranney Skate Board Park on the North side of E. Michigan Ave. near Frandor Shopping Center. The public action will coincide with 327 other events organized nationally by the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and Sponsored by the Gold Star Families for Peace, Iraq Veterans Against the War, and Military Families Speak Out. These events are part of AFSC’s “Not One More Death. Not One More Dollar.” campaign.

With public support for the War in Iraq at an all time low and a growing majority of Americans who see the war as a mistake that has no military solution, the death of the 2,000th US soldier stands as a grim reminder to the countless losses experienced throughout the war. The public action will focus on recognizing and remembering the families whose lives have been changed forever in the wake of a death or debilitating injury due to the war. In addition, the financial costs and misdirection of public funds will be remembered at the event. To date, the state of Michigan has lost 59 soldiers in Iraq. Lansing residents have spent over $53 million on the war.

Donations will be collected at the public action to assist military families and veterans who have been injured in the Iraq War, for the Iraqi people and the rebuilding of Iraq. The moneys will be given to Military Families Speak Out (http://www.mfso.org/ ), Gold Star Families for Peace (http://www.gsfp.org/) and Iraq Veterans Against the War (http://www.ivaw.net/ ). For more information about the nationally organized effort visit American Friends Service Committee (http://www.afsc.org ).
